Article 8. Granting of Political Asylum

Political asylum in the Republic of Uzbekistan shall be granted to foreign citizens and stateless persons taking into account the national interests of the Republic of Uzbekistan on the basis of generally recognized principles and rules of international law, in accordance with this Law and other normative legal acts of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Political asylum shall be granted to foreign citizens and stateless persons permanently residing in the territory of other states, as well as to their family members, who seek asylum or protection from persecution or from the real threat that they might be the victims of persecution in the country of their citizenship or permanent residence for social and political activities, religious beliefs, racial or ethnic origin, as well as from other cases of human rights violations that are provided for by the rules of international law.

The procedure and conditions for granting political asylum in the Republic of Uzbekistan shall be determined by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
